Around 1980, Delfts Blue was seen as nostalgic and old-fashioned. The last twenty years it has changed completely: it is hip and cultural heritage. The famous fashion designer Valentino created a collection under the name Valentino does Delft, inspired by Flamisch painters. Also in 2013 Jan Taminiau designed the inauguration dress of Queen Maxima, inspired by Delft Blue.

Here are 3 of the on cloud based designs for Delfts blue vases. The dream is to have this 3D printed in ceramics or hand made and painted. Later in this post you see all kind of vases made by designers. My designs are made by the images and the clouds self. That is the big difference.
Lets see what I can find on printing/producing with in reach; distance and price.
Olivier van Herpt
I saw a couple of articles about Olivier van Herpt, a Dutch designer who made his own 3D printer that can print ceramics. In the movie here you see it in action. What isn't clear to me is if it can just print certain shapes or really a shape from the computer.
The idea that he worked with was to celebrate Delftware by placing 14 stackable porcelain pieces mixed with cobalt pigment to evoke a new interpretation on a base from the 17th century. The piece is called Arcanum. This piece was made for the "Gemeente" Museum in The Hague. The Hague is a place close to Delft specialised in modern art.
As been seen in the film: the blue pattern is the translation of human interaction by the machine. Cobalt pigment is mixed by hand with the clay body before being inserted in the extruder. The pattern is then reconstructed by the 3D printer, resulting in a radial gradient celebrating cooperation between man and machine.
VORM VRIJ; Yao van den Heerik and Marlieke Wijnakker.
Vorm vrij is a company by 2 Dutch designers as Oliver van Herpt and Marlieke Wijnakker from the Industrial Design school in Eindhoven where I studied myself as well. Yao and Marlieke sell printers but Marlieke also scans people to 3D print their portrait or buste. It is printed 115% because the clay will shrink while drying. She also makes vases used for urns.
The articles MArlieke makes using a 3D scanner combined with the 3D clay printing are a kind of macabre but I can see its beauty and a clientele. By seeing this I know it is possible to print my vases with clay.

Looking at Pinterest I see a lot of interesting forms 3D printed in clay; looks also promising.

Inspired by Delfts Blue.
The artist and designers I found who were inspired by Delfts blue and gave a modern reaction making vases.

Dora Dolz: I know her because of the chairs she made inspired on Delfts blue but also on Spain. There is always a curl and an apple in my work she told me when I had to make a portrait of her for a magazine. At the right is her version of tulp vase.
Hans Withoos
Hans is a friend of mine and this work made by him is going to be on my wall very soon. The dress is made for this image. The scenery in the background is based on paintings with a grand, grand, grand father of Hans, Matthias Withoos who was born in 1627 an died in 1703.
You see the involvement of Delfts blue.

He has a lot of images where he uses pottery in still live. I was in two minds of choosing this one with the octopus. In the end I went for the more fashion-like one because that is how I see Hans; an artist who works with people.
